  • In New Zealand, restricted building work must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner, and all electrical, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying by a licensed tradesperson (EWRB for electricians, PGDB for plumbers and gasfitters). Check the public register before you hire.
  • For residential building work of $30,000 or more you are legally entitled to a written contract and a disclosure statement setting out the tradesperson's skills, licences and insurance. Ask for both before work starts.

Verify before you hire

  • Restricted building work on a home (structure and weathertightness) must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP): check the builder's licence on the LBP public register (lbp.govt.nz).
  • Most building work needs a building consent from your council and a Code Compliance Certificate (CCC) on completion: confirm these are in scope and that the LBP provides a Record of Work for restricted building work.
  • Membership of Registered Master Builders or Certified Builders is voluntary but can come with a guarantee (Master Build or Halo); a written contract is legally required for work over $30,000.
  • Residential building work carries implied warranties under the Building Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act regardless of contract: check public liability insurance too.

  • Does restricted building work without an LBP, or isn't on the LBP register.
  • Skips the building consent or won't help obtain the Code Compliance Certificate.
  • No written contract for work over $30,000, large up-front payments, or a bid far below every other quote.
