- Most alterations need a building consent and a Code Compliance Certificate (CCC) on completion: confirm both are in scope and that you'll get a Record of Work for the restricted work.
- A written contract is required by law for work over $30,000; favour a builder who is a Registered Master Builder or Certified Builder and offers a guarantee (Master Build or Halo).
- Residential work carries implied warranties under the Building Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act: check public liability insurance and GST registration too.
