  • In New Zealand, restricted building work must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner, and all electrical, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying by a licensed tradesperson (EWRB for electricians, PGDB for plumbers and gasfitters). Check the public register before you hire.
  • For residential building work of $30,000 or more you are legally entitled to a written contract and a disclosure statement setting out the tradesperson's skills, licences and insurance. Ask for both before work starts.
  • Look for consistent reviews across several named sources, not one polished profile.
  • Check any credential evidence, and that the business details independently check out.
  • Get a written quote and keep guarantee, insurance and payment terms in writing.

Verify before you hire

  • Electrical work must be done by a registered electrician with a current practising licence from the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB): check the licence on the EWRB public register (ewrb.govt.nz).
  • For prescribed electrical work you must receive a Certificate of Compliance (CoC), and for connected work an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC): confirm you'll get them.
  • A trainee may only work under the supervision of a licensed electrician: ask who holds the licence on your job.
  • Check public liability insurance and GST registration (required above $60,000 turnover).

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • Not on the EWRB register, or can't give a current registration/licence number.
  • Won't provide a Certificate of Compliance or Electrical Safety Certificate: uncertified work is illegal and can void insurance.
  • Offers a cheap cash job with no certification, or only a trainee attends unsupervised.
  • No proof of insurance, or a large up-front deposit.
