- Gasfitting is restricted, safety-critical work: your gasfitter must be registered and licensed with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB); verify the licence on the PGDB register (pgdb.co.nz).
- After gas work the licensed gasfitter must issue a gas Certificate of Compliance: confirm you'll receive one, as it records that the work is safe and certified.
- Confirm the work is within their licence class and that they work to the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations.
- Check public liability insurance and GST registration (required above $60,000 turnover).
Warning signs of a cowboy
- Not on the PGDB register, or no current gasfitting licence: unlicensed gas work is illegal and a carbon-monoxide and explosion risk.
- Won't issue a gas Certificate of Compliance for the work.
- Treats gas as 'just plumbing' without a separate gasfitting licence.
