I used William's services when he was trading under a different company name 'Will Builders' which is now the Construction Company. The work he and his team completed for us was over priced and shoddy at best. Further, due to their incompetence, a bathroom light fixture actually caught the top of the bathroom mirror on fire. Fortunately, I was home at the time and avoided a major house fire; a house which had three young children at home. In trying to rectify the problem, William was rude

Restricted building work in New Zealand must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Confirm they hold a current LBP licence - and check their licence class and any disciplinary history - on the LBP public register before you hire.

Check the LBP register
Never pay a large deposit up front — agree a staged payment schedule tied to completed milestones, and hold a small retention until snagging is done.
Get it in writing: an itemised quote with scope, materials, start and finish dates, and how any changes (variations) will be priced.
Be wary of a cash-only price or pressure to start tomorrow — both are red flags for an unaccountable job.
