Beware of this building renovator. While things started off well, since he finished the job in January and has been paid the majority of what he is owed, he has not been cooperative. 1) Barry will overpromise and underdeliver in terms of cost and workmanship. 2) Barry will make out like he is looking after you and trying to save you money, but then at the same time he will try to overcharge you on the work of other tradespeople he uses. He tried to charge us an extra $2000 on another

Restricted building work in New Zealand must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Confirm they hold a current LBP licence - and check their licence class and any disciplinary history - on the LBP public register before you hire.

Check the LBP register
Never pay a large deposit up front. Agree a staged payment schedule tied to completed milestones, and hold a small retention until snagging is done.
Get it in writing: an itemised quote with scope, materials, start and finish dates, and how any changes (variations) will be priced.
Be wary of a cash-only price or pressure to start tomorrow. Both are red flags for an unaccountable job.
