I thought I had a leaking water tank, so there was opportunity here for the plumber to totally lead me astray on the problem and do unnecessary work (which has happened to me before). Instead, I was advised that it was actually the toilet cistern and the problem was fixed. The extra work I thought I may have needed with the water tank, I was able to resolve myself, with some advice from the plumber. Totally superb service, I would highly recommend them.

I had a tap leaking at my tenant's property. I received a call from the plumber telling me that the tap needs to be changed and it will cost $240 + gst. I asked for details. I was told $160 for the tap (the cheapest option) + $80 for the work. I didn't want to go forward as I wanted to pick a tap myself. At my surprise, the tap was changed anyway without my consent ("as it was needed" they said) and I received a bill of $280 with a 'as quoted by the plumber' in the invoice. I asked

We didnt have hot water - the plumber came and checked the tank and said that it was rusted, corroded and couldnt be used - it would nee dto be replaced or the pipes diverted to the unit servicing the upstairs flat. He quoted around $3-5000 for a new tank or around $1000 to have the water hooked up to a different unit. The next morning the landlord sent his plumber around, who looked at the tank, picked up the loose wire, connected it and then got the hot water going. I dont know if it

This company messed us around and ended up creating more problems than what we started with. They didn't fix the problem they were engaged to fix properly, then weren't bothered about putting the issue right when our roof continued to leak. We repeatedly left messages and requests for them to ring us, which were ignored – frustrating to say the least. They sent us large bills without consulting us before the work, did not provide us with any explanation of what was involved in the repair, or

In New Zealand, most plumbing and drainlaying work, and all gasfitting, is restricted to licensed tradespeople. Check the person doing the work holds a current licence on the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board public register before you hire.

Check the PGDB register
Agree the call-out fee, the hourly or fixed rate, and whether parts are charged on top, in writing, before an emergency plumber starts. Out-of-hours overcharging and 'while I'm here' add-ons are common complaints.
Be wary of a plumber who, on a first visit, says your whole system or boiler must be replaced. Get a second opinion and an itemised quote (parts and labour separately) before agreeing to major work.
Gas and boiler work is a separate, regulated trade, not general plumbing. Make sure anyone working on a gas appliance is specifically registered to do gas work, and ask to see that registration before they start.
