We engaged General Construction to undertake the renovation of our bungalow, including the complete demolition of the rear of the house, two separate extensions, partial rebuild of the garage, fence, deck and pool excavation. The project was completed in three stages, enabling us to remain living in the house. Glenn and his team proved to be reliable, hardworking and efficient. Glenn is an excellent project manager with outstanding communication skills. He has great rapport with his

Glenn at General Construction was recommended to me as they had done quite a bit of work in the area. I engaged them to replace my roof and guttering, retile, rehang doors, plaster and paint, replace windows and fix an issue with my original wooden floor. Glenn and the team are very reliable and do a great job. They have a wide network of specialist tradesmen to call on when needed so for me General Construction is a one stop shop. I have used them several times throughout the year and

Glen, his builders and contactors followed the plan well, made suitable recommendations when required and kept us informed on a daily basis as to what was happening on the job. There were no surprises and cost overruns. His sub-contractors are also very reliable. We have received many very positive comments regarding our renovation.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Glenn and his team and have already done so on a number of occasions to friends and family. They kept the site clean and tidy throughout the job - important as we were still living in the house! They worked diligently and skilfully, and were well managed by Glenn who co-ordinated all the additional trades and kept me fully informed about progress. We will definitely be using General Construction again.

Restricted building work in New Zealand must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Confirm they hold a current LBP licence - and check their licence class and any disciplinary history - on the LBP public register before you hire.

Check the LBP register
Never pay a large deposit up front. Agree a staged payment schedule tied to completed milestones, and hold a small retention until snagging is done.
Get it in writing: an itemised quote with scope, materials, start and finish dates, and how any changes (variations) will be priced.
Be wary of a cash-only price or pressure to start tomorrow. Both are red flags for an unaccountable job.
