- Erecting scaffolding from which someone could fall 5 m or more requires a WorkSafe Certificate of Competence: ask to see the scaffolder's ticket for the class of scaffold you need.
- Scaffolding is high-risk work governed by WorkSafe: confirm the company carries public liability insurance and provides an inspection/handover record before you use it.
- Check GST registration (required above $60,000 turnover) and a written quote for the hire period and any extensions.
- For a home project, confirm who is responsible if the scaffold needs to stay up longer than planned.
Warning signs of a cowboy
- No Certificate of Competence for scaffold over 5 m, or vague about who holds the ticket.
- No public liability insurance, or no scaffold inspection/handover record.
