- Concrete foundations and floor slabs are restricted building work and must be done or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (foundations class): check the licence on the LBP register (lbp.govt.nz).
- Foundations usually need a building consent and a Code Compliance Certificate, with a council inspection of the reinforcing before the pour: confirm these and that you get a Record of Work.
- Non-structural work like a path or patio usually doesn't need a consent, but check public liability insurance and GST registration (required above $60,000 turnover).
- Get a written scope covering ground prep, reinforcing, concrete mix/strength and finish.
