What to check when hiring asbestos removal in New Zealand
MyTrustedTraders ranks on independent public evidence. No ads, no paid placement. Use these checks alongside the evidence on each profile before you decide who to contact.
- In New Zealand, restricted building work must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner, and all electrical, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying by a licensed tradesperson (EWRB for electricians, PGDB for plumbers and gasfitters). Check the public register before you hire.
- For residential building work of $30,000 or more you are legally entitled to a written contract and a disclosure statement setting out the tradesperson's skills, licences and insurance. Ask for both before work starts.
- Look for consistent reviews across several named sources, not one polished profile.
- Check any credential evidence, and that the business details independently check out.
- Get a written quote and keep guarantee, insurance and payment terms in writing.
How to judge an asbestos removal
Independent, no-ads guidance. The trade-specific checks that matter most, the warning signs, and what to ask before you hire. Use it alongside each tradesperson’s public evidence above.
Verify before you hire
- In New Zealand a licensed asbestos removalist holds a WorkSafe NZ asbestos removal licence: a Class A licence covers friable (crumbling) asbestos, a Class B licence covers non-friable/bonded asbestos. All friable work, and any bonded removal over 10 square metres, needs a licensed removalist: verify the licence with WorkSafe.
- Licensed removal must be notified to WorkSafe NZ (usually five days before work) with an Asbestos Removal Control Plan prepared. Ask to see the plan.
- For friable asbestos, an independent licensed asbestos assessor, not the removalist, must do air monitoring and issue a clearance certificate before you re-enter. Confirm it is included.
- Confirm asbestos liability insurance and that waste goes to a landfill approved to accept asbestos, with disposal records you are given.
Warning signs of a cowboy
- Removing friable asbestos, or more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos, without a WorkSafe asbestos removal licence.
- Dry-sanding, drilling, or power-tooling asbestos sheeting instead of keeping it wet and using hand tools: that releases fibres and is unlawful.
- No independent air monitoring or clearance certificate offered after friable removal.
- Won't provide a written control plan or proof the waste went to an approved facility.
Questions to ask before you hire
- What class of WorkSafe asbestos removal licence do you hold (A or B), and can I verify it?
- Will you notify WorkSafe and prepare an Asbestos Removal Control Plan before starting?
- Who does the independent air monitoring and clearance certificate for friable work?
- Which approved landfill will the waste go to, and will I get the disposal records?
Frequently asked questions
- How do I choose a trustworthy asbestos removal?
- Compare the public evidence on each profile: how many independent reviews they have and across how many named sources, the rating and how recent it is, any credential evidence, and the company status. An asbestos removal backed by several named sources is harder to fake than one found in only one place.
- Does MyTrustedTraders rank or recommend asbestos removal for payment?
- No. There are no ads and no paid placement. Asbestos removal are ranked only by the strength of independent public evidence. No one can pay to rank higher, add a badge, or change their reviews.
- Where do the reviews come from?
- They're imported from named public review sources and always shown with the source named. They aren't reviews written on MyTrustedTraders. We cross-check the same business across sources rather than creating new reviews.
- What should I check before hiring an asbestos removal?
- Confirm credentials and insurance directly with the asbestos removal, get a written quote, and run the Cowboy Checker on the business first. MyTrustedTraders helps you shortlist on the evidence. It doesn't replace your own checks before you hire.
