> "We took on the services of Leon and his team back in August for quite a large domestic job. Leon was very helpful and tolerant of our needs especially considering that we new nothing about renovating or what was going to be needed. Leon not only talked us through the entire process but he also gave solid advise about products we were considering and offered to source better quality products at more than competitive prices. ## Before you hire a plumber
_What to check when choosing this kind of trade (general guidance, not a claim about this business):_
- Agree the call-out fee, the hourly or fixed rate, and whether parts are charged on top, in writing, before an emergency plumber starts. Out-of-hours overcharging and 'while I'm here' add-ons are common complaints.
- Be wary of a plumber who, on a first visit, says your whole system or boiler must be replaced. Get a second opinion and an itemised quote (parts and labour separately) before agreeing to major work.
- Gas and boiler work is a separate, regulated trade, not general plumbing. Make sure anyone working on a gas appliance is specifically registered to do gas work, and ask to see that registration before they start.
- In New Zealand, restricted building work must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner, and all electrical, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying by a licensed tradesperson (EWRB for electricians, PGDB for plumbers and gasfitters). Check the public register before you hire.
- For residential building work of $30,000 or more you are legally entitled to a written contract and a disclosure statement setting out the tradesperson's skills, licences and insurance. Ask for both before work starts.
